JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

University Police and Public Safety will be accepting applications for the position of part-time Police Dispatcher/Recorder. Under the direction of the Operations Center Manager, the dispatcher/recorder will provide police communications and dispatching, maintain police files and records, and perform a wide variety of complex clerical duties requiring specialized knowledge in the police field. This successful candidate must be able to perform multi-tasking work involving answering emergency and non-emergency telephone calls and answering multiple calls at the same time; make decisions on incidents, emergencies, etc.; determine if ambulance is needed and make decisions on appropriate action for fires. Receive, evaluate, prioritize and disseminate district wide calls for assistance/service from employees, students, other law enforcement agencies and the public through voice radio and police assistance telephone; maintain two-way communication with police units; dispatch cars and personnel, maintain required records, maintain and update department computer systems. Question all complaints and obtain all available pertinent information needed to take further action; relay information to facilitate apprehension of offenders of crimes in progress; relay instructions to callers in need of immediate assistance; call out additional officers and appropriate University personnel as needed.

The applicant is required to comprehend policies, manuals, visual displays, forms, reports and must be able to effectively read and provide map location information to field personnel. Typically requires an applied trades training and three years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Applicant needs excellent oral communication skills and effective decision-making skills along with exceptional computer and typing skills, with minimal errors, to produce various reports and other data entry into the Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) computer system for processing police, fire and medical calls. Experience with CAD software and experience with two-way radio communications is recommended. Up to 8 - 20 hours per week and all work is performed on shifts including weekdays, evenings, weekend, and holidays.
