Position Overview:

Responsible for delivering best-in-class data science and artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities across Sutter Health. The incumbent plays a key role in managing and enhancing a data science and AI team, developing advanced capabilities that support Sutter Health’s strategic vision, and transforming patient care through data science techniques. They are responsible for advancing AI/machine learning (ML) capabilities that have a significant impact on patient care. They define the data science and AI approach, tools & technology, processes, and governance needed to meet the data science and AI needs of Sutter Health.

The incumbent is a strong practitioner of data science and AI/ML, demonstrating leadership, a deep understanding of data-driven clinical strategies, and the ability to drive business innovation through data. They collaborate closely with other leadership roles to evaluate, tune, and implement data science and AI solutions, leveraging AI/ML techniques to support clinical best practice. Enables a data science and AI strategy of collaboration by cross-functional teams, working across the organization on the strategy, use case exploration, and deployment of AI-driven capabilities.

Builds and leads Sutter’s team of data scientists, leveraging their experience to accelerate the development and adoption of high-value and meaningful healthcare AI solutions. This team is responsible for algorithmic governance, evaluating, validating, and supporting the next generation of solutions that will enhance clinical and patient outcomes. The strategies the team utilizes are related to fields of study, including machine learning modeling and statistical simulation, natural language processing and computer vision, deep learning and neural networks, behavioral learning and analysis, and performance predictions. Enables the data science and AI team to draw new and unique observations through causal inference and machine learning, enhancing the efficacy and value of clinical care and deriving insights for Sutter’s patients, providers, and leadership.

TYPICAL EXPERIENCE:

8 years recent relevant experience

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Thorough understanding of the recent advances in the Data Science and AI field, especially around large language models, unsupervised approaches, and generative AI; expertise in architecting, designing, and deploying predictive and generative models and algorithms in real-world clinical environments.

  • Demonstrated leadership and project management skills in deploying, leading, and implementing successful projects; ability to inspire and motivate a team to achieve ambitious goals.

  • Solid technical and in-depth knowledge of machine learning, statistical modeling, and programming languages like Python or R.

  • Excellent communication and people skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and present complex data-driven insights to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Strong strategic thinking and decision-making skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business strategies and initiatives.

  • Strong leadership and team-building capabilities, focusing on fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to adjust priorities quickly as circumstances dictate.

Pay Range is $88.63 to $141.82 / hour. California Pay Range is $88.63 to $141.82 / hour. Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Texas Pay Range is $80.58 to $128.92 / hour. Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah Pay Range is $72.52 to $116.03 / hour.

The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
