MD Anderson Cancer Center Senior Data Scientist - Hematopoietic Biology & Malignancy in Houston, Texas

Senior Data Scientist - Hematopoietic Biology & Malignancy

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

SUMMARY

The primary function of the Senior Data Scientist is to provide analysis and develop algorithms and software for clinical and scientific problems solved by multi-omic integrative approaches.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Computational Analysis

Experience analyzing and interpreting NGS data such as RNA-seq, Chip-Seq, Ribo-Seq. Any prior experience in analyzing ONT (Oxford Nanopore) data will be helpful. Knowledge of CRISPR systems and experience in designing CRISPR libraries. Perform temporal analysis of single-cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq data to infer clonal dynamics and evolutionary trajectories of tumor and immune cells. Create novel algorithms for integrating short and long-read single-cell sequencing results in order to attain comprehensive variant detection, isoform identification and quantification. Develop robust normalization, integration, and batch correction workflows for analysis of single-cell data.

Data Management

Develop/modify/create pipelines for interpreting data from single-cell (and/or bulk data) experiments from publicly available and locally developed tools. Develop and maintain software tools and infrastructure for resolving specific problems. Ensure data organization.

Leadership Role in Ongoing Research Projects

Lead computationally focused scientific research projects with moderate supervision from the PI. Provide inputs regarding analytical approaches, set up analyses, and can develop new computational research methods. Instruct and provide guidance to other staff in basic computational research techniques and procedures. Provide advanced bioinformatic, statistical and visualization support to ongoing research projects in the lab. Organize data and document code developed for each project.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Statistics, Computational Biology, or related field.

Education Preferred: Individuals with a PhD in Biology, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or related areas are encouraged to apply. Proven track record of publications, excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

Experience Required: Five years of experience in scientific software or industry programming with a concentration in scientific computing. With Master's degree, three years experience required. With PhD, one year of experience required.

Experience Preferred: The ideal candidate will have formal training and experience in analysis of different NGS datasets (bulk RNA-seq, Chip-Seq, Ribo-Seq) and a wide range of single-cell sequencing profiling data. The candidate will have experience in the creation or use of genome assembly, transcriptional isoform annotation, gene modeling, RNA-seq based fusion detection and/or spliced alignments algorithms. Prior knowledge of cancer biology or immunology is a plus. Proficiency in scripting, statistical computing and use of high-performance computing environments is expected. Software development experience is desirable but not required. Must thrive in an academic/professional atmosphere, where interdisciplinary teams are central to project success.
