Minimum Qualifications:

High School graduate or GED, no experience required.

Job Summary:

Provides basic technical assistance in the administration of policies, standards, and regulations relating to environmental health and safety under general supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate degree in environmental, natural, or applied science, or related field, and or 6 months of related experience.

Job Duties:

Primarily works in the Environmental Protection Management group of the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) department, responsible for ensuring that hazardous materials, including chemical and radioactive wastes and other materials generated by UTMB are handled, managed, and transported according to strict internal procedures. Will also periodically work with other groups within EHS as needed to accomplish common goals.

  • Provides technical support on environmental assignments within established time frames.

  • Performs inspection or testing of environmental equipment and registered facilities.

  • Performs determinations and management of hazardous waste.

  • Assists in the data collection and management of records of hazardous waste.

  • Assists in the implementation of new/improved work processes under Environmental Protection Management.

  • Collection, segregation, and overall management of hazardous wastes (Chemical, Radiological, Regulated Medical).

  • Coordinates work duties within program areas and with contractors.

  • Provides technical support on safety assignments within established time frames.

  • Performs calibration, inspection, or testing of safety equipment.

  • Assists in the development and delivery of safety training programs.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of new/improved work processes.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.

  • Performs related duties as required.

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:

  • Knowledge in environmental health & safety regulations.

  • Ability to inspect, test, monitor, or measure safe environmental levels.

Working Environment:

  • Standard hospital, clinical, laboratory and/or office environments.

  • Potential exposure to hazardous conditions and/or materials. May involve strenuous activity such as walking, lifting, and moving of material. May require the use of personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection, chemical-resistant clothing, etc.

  • Standard office equipment and equipment used to ensure safe environmental levels.

  • May be required to pass the "Basic Radiation Safety in the Laboratory" course within the first 6 months of employment.

  • May be required to achieve or maintain 24- or 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations certification according to 29 CFR 1910 requirements within the first 6 months of hire.

  • Ability to drive UTMB vehicles.

Salary Range:

Actual salary commensurate with experience.
